The Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) is seeking a Legislative Intern for the Spring 2025 semester. This paid internship opportunity will provide hands-on experience in legislative affairs and government relations. The intern will work within the Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs department, assisting with various tasks related to monitoring legislation, representing the agency's interests, and communicating with legislators and other government officials.
As a Legislative Intern, you will have the opportunity to gain valuable skills in writing, critical thinking, research, and political experience. The ideal candidate will have a passion for public policy and human services, as well as experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities. This internship is open to both junior and senior students, with a preference for seniors.
The primary responsibilities of the intern will include assisting the bureau's Director and Coordinator with proactive lobbying correspondence, conducting research on legislation, tracking legislative and constituent cases, and drafting responses to legislative letters. The intern may also have the opportunity to attend hearings and assist with special projects within other OPWDD departments.
This is a part-time internship, with hours to be determined based on the intern's school schedule, the legislative session calendar, and remote work days for the Director and Liaison. The intern will be paid for their time and will have the opportunity to work on various projects and gain hands-on experience in a professional setting.
The desired candidate for this position should have a strong academic standing, with a preferred standing of senior. The internship is open to students majoring in Communication Studies, Human Services, Legal Studies, Public Administration, Public Health, or Social Science. However, candidates with other majors and a strong interest in legislative affairs are also encouraged to apply.
