We are currently seeking a Legal Director to lead our litigation and legal services in pursuit of greater economic security and equity for low-income individuals and families in the state. In this role, you will have the chance to use your legal expertise and leadership skills to help drive systemic change and advance racial and economic justice in Maine.
As the Legal Director, you will oversee MEJ's legal services and litigation strategy, working closely with our team of attorneys and advocates to develop and support high-impact cases. You will also collaborate with other departments within the organization to ensure our legal advocacy is aligned with our broader systemic goals and community-driven. This is a highly collaborative role that requires a strong understanding of anti-poverty law, strategic thinking, and a deep commitment to social justice.
Maine Equal Justice is a nonprofit organization based in Augusta, Maine, dedicated to promoting economic justice and equity for people with low income. We work to increase access to healthcare, food, income security, and education and training opportunities for all Mainers. As the Legal Director, you will play a crucial role in advancing our mission and making a positive impact on the lives of thousands of people in Maine.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and support high-impact cases and align legal advocacy with broader systemic goals - Supervise and mentor a team of attorneys and advocates - Collaborate with other departments to ensure our work is community-centered and aligned with the lived experiences of people impacted by poverty - Represent clients and client groups in court, before administrative agencies, and in other forums - Provide legal expertise and support to the policy team, including legal research, policy analysis, and drafting legislation - Collaborate and coordinate with other legal services organizations to inform systemic advocacy and ensure high-quality representation for clients - Contribute to strategic discussions and priority setting within the organization
Qualifications:
- JD degree from an accredited law school - Member in good standing of state and federal bars - Experience litigating class action cases - Minimum of eight years of experience in civil legal services, litigation, policy analysis, or working on issues affecting people with low incomes - Strong understanding of anti-poverty law, including health, welfare, and food assistance - Knowledge of administrative procedure and rulemaking - Ability to work effectively with a diverse pool of clients and allies - Excellent written and verbal communication skills - Proficiency in Microsoft Office and G-Suite; Salesforce experience is a plus
Location and Compensation:
This is a hybrid position, with a weekly in-person presence required in Augusta and Portland. The salary range for this position is $84,000-$94,000, depending on experience. MEJ also offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health and dental insurance, employer-paid life insurance and disability insurance, retirement accounts, generous vacation and sick time, and paid holidays.
