Overview: The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation is seeking an experienced Legal Counsel to join their team. This is a full-time position located in Mashantucket, CT. The Legal Counsel will work under the direction of the General Counsel to provide legal advice and services to the Tribal Nation and its departments, arms, subdivisions, regulatory bodies, committees, entities, and business enterprises. The ideal candidate will have a Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited/approved law school and 3-5 years of experience practicing law in a government, private, or corporate setting with some exposure to federal Indian law. Admittance to practice law in a state or federal jurisdiction is required, preferably in Connecticut. The Legal Counsel must also be admitted to practice law in the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Court within one year of appointment.
Responsibilities: • Provide legal advice and services to the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation on legal rights, responsibilities, and obligations • Conduct legal research and analysis on various issues and communicate findings to the Tribal Nation, elected officials, officers, employees, and representatives • Work cooperatively with other attorneys and paralegals and take direction from the General Counsel and Associate General Counsel • Communicate legal concepts and analysis to resolve legal matters with patrons, vendors, and other necessary parties • Adhere to all relevant laws and regulations, including the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal and Native American Preference Law
Qualifications: • Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited/approved law school • 3-5 years of experience practicing law in a government, private, or corporate setting with some exposure to federal Indian law • Admittance to practice law in a state or federal jurisdiction, preferably in Connecticut • Admittance to practice law in the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Court within one year of appointment • Excellent communication, interpersonal, negotiation, organizational, and problem-solving skills • Strong research and analytical abilities, both orally and in written form
