H2: Make a Difference and Help Overcome Barriers for Low-Income Communities in Western North Carolina

If so, **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW*** (PLS) is looking for you to join our team as a full-time Legal Assistant/ Screener for Disaster Recovery.
As a community-based non-profit legal aid agency, PLS provides free civil legal assistance to low-income people in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina (WNC). With offices in multiple cities and a dedicated team of staff and volunteers, PLS serves over 20,000 people per year in poverty law areas such as housing, public benefits, domestic violence prevention, health care, immigration, and consumer law.
In this role, you will work alongside PLS attorneys and volunteers to assist with disaster recovery efforts in WNC. Your passion for justice, creative and zealous mindset, and commitment to achieving lasting results for clients and low-income communities will be crucial to your success in this position.
Key Responsibilities:
- Screen clients for eligibility and provide general administrative and legal assistance support to attorneys - Prepare and edit legal documents and conduct client interviews with a trauma-informed approach - Accompany clients to court and travel within the PLS service area and to meetings or conferences in other parts of NC - Adhere to program priorities and case handling policies, procedures, and standards of practice - Work with volunteers and PLS Development Team - Assist with Hurricane Helene disaster response work as needed
Qualifications:
- Valid driver's license and associate/bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent professional experience - Passion for and commitment to PLS' mission, values, and vision - Strong skills in socio-economic and cultural sensitivity and working with individuals who may be angry, upset, or ill - Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills - Ability to work well with teams and independently - Basic computer skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel. Knowledge of email marketing, graphic design, and other communications skills are a plus.
Salary and Benefits:
