**MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***, a non-profit organization, is seeking a Legal Intern to assist in providing free legal services to survivors of sex trafficking and sex workers in the D.C. metro area. This internship offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the legal field while making a positive impact on the lives of vulnerable individuals.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Familiarize with laws related to expungement, custody, restraining orders, victim advocacy, and public benefits in DC, Maryland, and/or Virginia. - Conduct legal research for expungement of records cases, civil cases, criminal defense cases, and victim-witness advocacy under the supervision of Amara staff attorneys. - Write a blog post on issues surrounding Amara's work. - Assist with policy advocacy work at the local level, including researching current laws, writing policy memos, and attending policy meetings. - Accompany Amara staff to important meetings with community stakeholders, judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, media, and local and federal lawmakers. - Assist with organizational development projects based on personal interest and skills, such as grant writing, social media, and promotion.
Qualifications:
- Current pursuit of a post-secondary degree, such as a J.D. or Masters in Public Policy. - Availability to work 10-20 hours per week during Fall and Spring, and 30-40 hours during Summer (flexible hours). - Excellent research and writing skills. - Demonstrated interest or knowledge in domestic violence law and/or sexual assault law, with a preference for experience or interest in human trafficking law and/or sex worker rights. - Passion for public service and advocacy. - Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills. - Detail-oriented and able to complete tasks thoroughly. - Ability to work autonomously and virtually if needed. - Proactive and self-motivated. - Excellent organizational, time management, and multitasking skills.
