Smith’s Fort Historic Interpreter Position Description: Preservation Virginia’s Smith’s Fort seeks an Historic Interpreter who will primarily be responsible for leading 45-60 minute guided tours of the historic Smith’s Fort manor house and grounds, and serving as front-line staff in the museum. Historic Interpreters will engage diverse audiences in topics to include but is not limited to: the 17th-19th century Tidewater, Virginia history, culture, society, economics, politics, and the complexities of gender, race, and slavery; conflict, war, and revolution in colonial Virginia, as well as architectural and plantation history of the property. Historic Interpreters will provide guided tours to diverse audiences including adults and students/youth organizations, and will assist with special events. Historic Interpreters will receive necessary training in site and related histories, best practices in public history, historic interpretation, and tour techniques, among other necessary information to perform the position. Cape Henry Lighthouse Historic Interpreter Position Description: Preservation Virginia seeks an Historic Interpreter for the Cape Henry Lighthouse. Located inside of the Fort Story military base, in Virginia Beach, VA, Cape Henry Lighthouse is the first public works project to be authorized by the newly formed U.S. Congress in 1792. The Interpreter will be responsible for providing stationed interpretation, walking tours and special programs as well as serving as front-line staff in the museum store. Historic Interpreters will engage diverse audiences on topics related to the science and history of the lighthouse. Communications Manager Position Description: Preservation Virginia seeks an enthusiastic and qualified Communications Manager to grow awareness of Preservation Virginia’s programs, services and historic properties. The Communications Manager is responsible for coordinating and implementing Preservation Virginia’s comprehensive marketing and public relations program, which includes electronic and print communications, media relations, advertising, promotions and community outreach. Reporting to the Director of Development, the Communications Manager will work closely with the management team and coordinate with the development team on messaging. Director of Development Preservation Virginia seeks a knowledgeable and enthusiastic Director of Development to help grow its fundraising effort. Founded in 1889, Preservation Virginia is the nation’s first statewide preservation association and manages six historic sites open to the public while coordinating extensive community engagement efforts. The individual will identify, cultivate and develop fundraising strategies to expand philanthropic efforts through membership, planned and major gifts. The candidate will be responsible for writing and managing grants, including federal, state and foundation. The candidate will supervise an office of four and work closely with the Board of Trustees and the Development Committee.
