This is a unique opportunity to have an immediate and profound impact on housing in rural Maine by focusing on eviction defense in Kennebec and Somerset Counties.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide high-quality, low-barrier legal services to tenants with low incomes who are at risk of losing their housing - Provide occasional coverage for eviction cases in other areas of Maine on an 'as needed' basis - Work closely with Pine Tree's statewide Housing Practice Group - Engage in outreach to educate tenants, advocates, and providers on housing stability issues and resources - Handle a high-volume practice, including direct legal advocacy such as legal advice, brief assistance, negotiations, mediation, and full representation - Assist tenants with applications for rental assistance or other resources - Travel frequently for work activities, including trainings, meetings, and outreach activities - Attend client meetings at locations outside the office - Travel to other courts and offices of partner agencies as needed
Qualifications:
- Admitted to the practice of law in Maine or eligible for licensure with the Maine Bar and able to practice under MRCP 11 (c) while working at Pine Tree - Previous litigation experience strongly preferred - Reside in or be willing to relocate to the state of Maine
Compensation and Benefits:
- Salary range of $69,490 - $106,490 depending on experience - Employer-paid health insurance with a generous HRA contribution - Generous health insurance opt-out benefit - Employer-paid dental insurance - Employer-paid life and disability insurance - Annual contribution to a 403(b) retirement plan - Other voluntary options include vision and expanded life insurance - 12 paid holidays - Paid parental leave - Generous vacation, floating holidays, and sick leave
