General Description of Position:
The Director of Diversity, Equity and Belonging has primary responsibility for the development and coordination of outreach and awareness programs which promote multicultural education for the campus community. Outreach areas include, but are not limited to student life programming; general student contact and referral; professional and student staff development; and program support to student organizations. This position is responsible for establishing programs, workshops, and activities that meet the needs of the minority student population. Serves as a member of the Diversity Council. Works to fulfill the College’s eight diversity goals.
Major Responsibilities:
Develop and implement programs and services that promote the enrollment, retention, academic progress and completion of minority students.
Provide cultural, academic, and student life activities that will enhance minority student retention, scholarship and graduation with a focus on personal development, professional development, leadership skills, networking techniques, and other related topics.
Provide leadership and direction in creating and maintaining a campus environment conducive to racial and cultural diversity.
Serve as an advocate for minority students and others; act as a liaison between students and faculty/administration.
Provide leadership in the development of strategies for recruitment of students from the minority populations.
Work with administrative personnel and Executive Director of Human Resources to establish affirmative action goals and to encourage and support administrative personnel in their efforts to recruit and retain a diverse student body, faculty, and staff offering appropriate assistance to schools and departments to achieve diverse applicant pools for academic and staff positions.
Contribute to planning and actions that will enable search committees to develop diverse pools of candidates for faculty and staff positions. Review applicant pools as applicable (prior to search committees convening) with the Executive Director of Human Resources. Participate as a member of search committees as applicable.
Participate in the assessment of the Office of Diversity, Equity and Belonging in order to increase its effectiveness by keeping statistical information regarding retention of minority students and program completion.
Provide leadership for the African American Male Summit initiative.
Develop and supervise the operation of the Mentoring program.
Maintain a working knowledge of Ivy Tech policies, procedures, issues and concerns relevant to increasing minority participation and retention in higher education.
Serve as account manager, prepare budget recommendations, monitor and approve expenditures.
Conduct all activities within the established guidelines of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Initiate programs, training sessions, workshops and discussions to foster institutional awareness of, and commitment to, student, faculty, and staff diversity goals, including diversity awareness, gender equity and equal opportunity for all qualified candidates for appointment and promotion.
Serve as a member of the Diversity Council.
In the context of this position, serve as a member of the Richmond Campus Cabinet and the Chancellor’s Council.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.
Minimum of three years of progressive experience in multicultural affairs or a related area.
Excellent human relations, communication, and organizational skills.
Excellent presentation and public speaking skills.
Ability to empathize with and relate to special populations, particularly racially and culturally diverse individuals.
