Deputy Sheriff: Enforcing Laws and Protecting Communities
The role of a Deputy Sheriff is a critical one in our society. These law enforcement officers are responsible for enforcing federal and state laws, as well as court orders and warrants. They play a vital role in keeping our communities safe by patrolling assigned areas, responding to calls for service, and making arrests when necessary.
Essential Job Functions: - Enforce federal and state laws, court orders, and warrants - Conduct investigations and write reports on incidents - Patrol assigned areas to detect and prevent crime - Respond to calls for service and provide assistance - Investigate criminal complaints and accidents - Enforce motor vehicle laws - Assist with the preparation of cases for trial and testify in court - Prepare timely and accurate reports - Attend community meetings and organize neighborhood watches - Write and execute search warrants - Maintain assigned vehicle, firearms, and other equipment - Direct traffic when needed - Collect and maintain evidence
Minimum Qualifications: - Must be a U.S. Citizen - High School diploma or GED - At least 21 years of age at the date of hire (unless applicant has an associate degree or 60 credit hours of post-secondary education) - Possess a valid driver's license with an acceptable motor vehicle record - Able to read and write at a level necessary to master law enforcement basic training course - Good character and reputation - Successfully complete all hiring steps (see below)
Preferred Qualifications: - Full-time law enforcement officer certification from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy or another state accepted by MCJA
