Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced California-licensed Criminal Law Attorney to join our growing team as an independent contractor. This position offers the freedom of remote work with competitive compensation at $100 per hour. Essential Responsibilities
Independently manage a diverse caseload of criminal matters including misdemeanors, felonies, DUI/DWI cases, and post-conviction relief
Represent clients confidently in arraignments, preliminary hearings, motion hearings, trials, and sentencing proceedings
Conduct thorough legal research and develop strategic defense approaches tailored to client circumstances
Draft precise legal documents including motions to suppress, discovery requests, trial briefs, and plea agreements
Provide clear, realistic legal advice to clients facing stressful criminal proceedings
Negotiate effectively with prosecutors to achieve favorable plea bargains when appropriate
Maintain detailed case documentation and timely communication with clients
Analyze complex evidence, including digital evidence, body camera footage, and surveillance data
Qualifications
Required:
Active California State Bar license in good standing
2 years of hands-on criminal law experience in California courts
Demonstrated trial and litigation experience in criminal matters
Strong knowledge of California Penal Code, Criminal Procedure, and relevant case law
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Proven ability to work independently while maintaining high-quality work product
Reliable internet connection and home office setup conducive to client consultations
Experience with legal practice management software
Preferred:
3-5 years of specialized criminal defense experience
Experience in related practice areas (especially where criminal law intersects with family law)
Background in plea negotiations and sentencing mitigation
Demonstrated experience using technology to enhance legal practice efficiency
Familiarity with digital court filing systems and remote court appearances
Experience working in a distributed or remote team environment
Background using or willingness to learn AI-assisted legal research and document automation
Education
Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
Continuing education in criminal law specialties a plus
Technical Skills & Innovation
Strong technology aptitude and willingness to embrace legal innovation
Proficiency with legal research platforms (Westlaw, LexisNexis, etc.)
Experience with case management software and digital document management
Comfort with video conferencing platforms for client meetings and court appearances
