About the Organization: The Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) is the largest house staff union in the United States, representing over 33,000 resident physicians. A local of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), CIR is dedicated to improving residency training and education, advancing patient care, and expanding healthcare access for communities. CIR's mission is to empower interns, residents, and fellows to fight for excellence for patients.
Job Summary: CIR is seeking a Counsel with a demonstrated commitment to immigrant rights and the labor movement. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience in either immigration or labor law, with some familiarity in the other area of law. This position will report directly to the General Counsel and will be located in the New York or New Jersey area.
What You'll Do:
Immigration Law: - Represent CIR members on H-1B petitions for residency programs - Participate as co-counsel on the in-house H-1B team - Advise union staff and members on immigration matters - Assist residents experiencing visa issues abroad - Interface with immigration cooperating counsel - Participate in webinars on immigration law for CIR members and employers - Review CIR Legal Services requests for assistance and troubleshoot issues
Labor Law: - Advise union staff on collective bargaining agreements and grievances - Represent CIR before labor relations boards for unfair labor practices and organizing - Represent CIR in arbitration and before state and federal agencies - Provide support in collective negotiations - Provide legal advice on internal and external matters - Review written material for legal accuracy
What Makes a Great Candidate: - Admission to a state bar (preferably New York, New Jersey, or Washington D.C.) - Minimum 3 years experience in immigration or labor law - Familiarity with the National Labor Relations Act and New Jersey Employer-Employee Relations Act - Understanding of collective bargaining process and contract enforcement - Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment - Detail-oriented with strong legal research and writing skills - Ability to manage conflict and maintain professional relationships - Willingness to travel to worksites in multiple states - Proficiency with Google products - Commitment to social justice and diversity, equity, and inclusion - Fully vaccinated for COVID-19
