Overview:
The City Attorney for the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW*** is responsible for providing legal counsel and representation for all City operations. This includes acting as the legal representative for elected and appointed officials, as well as City departments. The City Attorney also serves as the Chief Legal Officer, responsible for all aspects of the City's legal work.
Responsibilities:
- Provide legal advice and guidance to City boards, commissions, and departments on the legal implications of City operations. - Manage and supervise professional, support, and contract staff. - Plan, organize, and evaluate legal activities, including civil and criminal litigation. - Study and interpret laws, court decisions, and other authorities for legal advice and opinions. - Evaluate claims filed against the City and make recommendations for action. - Defend the City and its employees in lawsuits. - Review and approve all legal documents for the City, including contracts and ordinances. - Monitor legal developments and recommend appropriate action. - Attend City Council meetings and other required meetings.
Qualifications:
- Graduation from a college or university with an appropriate law degree. - Five years of experience in active law practice in California, with two years in a lead/supervisory role. - Knowledge of civil and criminal law, municipal government, and employee supervision. - Ability to perform legal research, analyze complex problems, and make sound recommendations. - Strong communication and presentation skills. - Must be a current member of the California State Bar Association.
