Overview:
- The Indigent Defense Commission (IDC) is seeking an Attorney - Assistant Public Defender I to join their team in Pulaski, Virginia. - This full-time, salaried position offers a competitive salary of $75,705.00 plus state benefits. - The attorney will handle criminal cases for adults and juveniles in various stages of litigation, and will report to the Chief Public Defender of the Pulaski office. - The ideal candidate will have a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and be admitted to the Virginia State Bar, with a strong interest in indigent defense, criminal justice reform, and social justice. - Prior experience defending criminal cases will be strongly considered. - The attorney must have excellent legal skills, the ability to spot and anticipate legal issues, and the ability to make sound legal arguments in a courtroom setting. - This position requires the ability to work independently and collaboratively, as well as the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. - A valid driver’s license and the means to travel to all courts and regional jails are required. - Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a fingerprint-based criminal background check and authorization to work in the U.S. - This position qualifies for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) depending on the type of loan. - Applications must be submitted electronically through the IDC website, and must include a cover letter and resume. - Reasonable accommodations are available for applicants upon request during the application and/or interview process.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct client and witness interviews. - Work with staff investigators to investigate cases. - File pretrial motions and post-trial motions. - Litigate motions and notice appropriate appealable issues. - Try cases in the General District, Juvenile and Domestic Relations, and Circuit Courts. - See clients in jail in a timely manner and communicate regularly with the client, family members, and other approved parties. - Track and meet deadlines. - Multi-task, prioritize assignments, and remain organized.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and Virginia State Bar admission is required for consideration for this full-time, salaried position. - An active interest in the cause of indigent defense, criminal justice reform, and social justice. - Willingness to try cases and desire to improve as a trial attorney. - The ability to learn and quickly internalize feedback is important. - The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. - The ability to multi-task, prioritize assignments, and remain organized. - A valid driver’s license and the means to travel to all courts and regional jails are required. - Knowledge of criminal law and evidence is required.
