The Indigent Defense Commission (IDC) is seeking a dedicated and passionate attorney to join their team as an Assistant Public Defender I in Pulaski, Virginia. In this role, you will have the opportunity to advocate for the rights and dignity of indigent clients and be a part of the modern-day Civil Rights Movement in criminal justice and justice reform. Key Responsibilities: - Conduct client and witness interviews - Work with staff investigators to investigate cases - File pretrial and post-trial motions - Litigate motions and notice appealable issues - Try cases in various courts - See clients in jail and communicate regularly with clients, family members, and other approved parties
Minimum Qualifications: - Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and Virginia State Bar admission - Active interest in indigent defense, criminal justice reform, and social justice - Willingness to try cases and desire to improve as a trial attorney - Ability to learn from feedback and track and meet deadlines - Excellent communication skills, both oral and written - Strong organizational and multitasking abilities - Valid driver’s license and means of transportation to travel to courts and regional jails - Knowledge of criminal law and evidence
Additional Considerations: - Prior experience defending criminal cases will be strongly considered - Individuals hired before obtaining their Virginia Bar licensure will be employed as Law Clerks and receive a starting salary of $63,260.00, with a potential for advancement upon passing the Virginia Bar exam
