Organization: - Community, State and National Affairs Group includes Government Relations, Programs, Volunteer Engagement, Community Outreach, and Advocacy at all levels - Delivers on AARP's social mission by educating and engaging people 50-plus and their families, strengthening communities, and championing issues for financial and health security
Job Description: - Develop and implement federal, state, and local-level advocacy goals and objectives - Represent AARP and its interests to elected officials and public policy leaders - Partner with internal and external stakeholders to develop and execute advocacy campaigns - Recruit and train volunteers to support legislative priorities - Collaborate with management to streamline processes and develop new procedures
Responsibilities: - Develop and implement advocacy strategies and campaigns at all levels - Build and maintain relationships with governmental representatives - Collaborate with internal and external partners on advocacy campaign communication strategy - Identify issues of public policy and organizational importance and advocate for AARP's interests - Serve as a subject-matter-expert on advocacy issues and produce reports to share findings and advance solutions - Recruit, train, and deploy volunteers in alignment with organizational goals
Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree, Master's, J.D., or Ph.D preferred - 4 years of experience in lobbying, governmental relations, legislative staff, or similar roles - Strong understanding of the state's political and community service environment - Willingness to travel up to 50% of work and possess a valid driver's license
Preferred: - Previous government relations and grassroots-organizing experience - Past gubernatorial or legislative policy experience - Municipal government experience
Additional Requirements: - Regular and reliable attendance - Effective communication skills - Respectful and understanding of others - Ability to make sound decisions - Ability to work effectively in a moderate noise environment - Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds
Hybrid Work Environment: - AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as remote workdays, except for essential functions - Remote work only available within the United States and its territories
