Associate General Counsel Risk and Regulatory - San Diego, CA
Ensign Services, Inc. (ESI) is seeking an experienced Associate General Counsel to join our rapidly expanding team and support our growing client base across the United States. This position will be based in our California Service Center and will be dedicated to serving our California client facilities.
About the Company:
ESI is a leading provider of post-acute care services with over 348 operations across 14 states. Our client facilities include skilled nursing facilities, assisted living facilities, and other ancillary service providers. We operate without a traditional management hierarchy and instead, our facilities are supported by a world-class service team known as the “Service Center.” The Service Center provides centralized legal, human resource, training, accounting, information technology, and other resources to allow on-site leaders and caregivers to focus on delivering exceptional care and managing day-to-day business operations.
About the Opportunity:
As the Associate General Counsel, you will provide legal advice and guidance to our client facilities in the areas of survey management, general liability, and professional liability. You will also educate field personnel in these specialized areas and help manage legal risks for our facilities. Other responsibilities include:

Responsibilities:
- Serve as a culture leader and model our unique culture across the organization - Advise field personnel on regulatory issues and directives - Draft, file, and argue hearings and briefs before regulatory bodies in California and the U.S. Department of HHS Appeals Board - Work closely with client facilities to investigate regulatory findings and draft IDR/IIDR for State and Federal submission - Conduct pre-claim evaluations and investigations, including medical records review and witness interviews - Participate in pre-suit mediations and negotiations - Collaborate with internal and external litigation counsel on case strategy - Represent and support client facilities and employees in administrative or court proceedings - Provide guidance on healthcare laws, Medicare/Medicaid regulations, and other state and federal laws related to post-acute care - Communicate client facilities’ needs to Service Center colleagues - Proactively assist client facilities in managing legal risk issues
Professional Qualifications:
- Minimum of four years’ experience in professional negligence and/or elder abuse defense, preferably as in-house counsel or in a law firm setting - Risk management experience is preferred - Experience in preparing and managing regulatory appeals - Experience in litigating general/professional negligence claims - J.D. from an accredited institution; licensed to practice law in CA - Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with a team-oriented mindset - Ability to give clear direction and produce excellent results - Exceptional presentation, writing, and communication skills - Professional demeanor and executive presence

Additional Information:
- This is an in-office position for applicants in and around San Juan Capistrano/Orange County area - For applicants applying from the San Diego or NorCal area, this role will be remote - Expected travel 40% of the time
Compensation:
We value our employees and are committed to providing a competitive benefits and compensation package. This includes a salary range of $160,000 - $200,000 (DOE) with potential for bonuses. Our benefits package also includes medical/dental/vision coverage, company-provided life insurance, 401(k) with company match, and sick/vacation plans.
