As the Associate Counsel, you will provide legal advice and counsel to the Board of School Commissioners, the CEO, and other school system employees on a variety of legal matters. This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney with a Juris Doctorate Degree and a minimum of five years of experience in public or private sector law practice, preferably with a focus on public school legal issues.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide legal advice and counsel on legal requirements, best practices, and developments in assigned legal practice area(s) - Represent the Board, CEO, and other school system employees in cases and matters before federal and state courts and administrative hearings - Support the school system in response to complaints and investigations by government agencies - Negotiate settlements and resolutions of legal matters - Conduct legal research and draft legal opinions - Keep abreast of relevant legislation and provide updates to school system staff - Develop and facilitate trainings for staff on education law - Utilize resources efficiently and exercise sound judgment and decision-making skills
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school - Minimum of five years of recent, progressively responsible experience in public or private sector law practice - Membership in the Maryland State Bar highly preferred - Thorough knowledge of legal principles and expertise in one or more of the primary legal practice areas - Excellent organizational skills and ability to assess and resolve complex legal problems - Strong communication skills, both written and oral - Ability to develop and maintain relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders - Proficient in technical computer applications and case management systems
