General Description:
The Cook County State’s Attorney Office is seeking an experienced Assistant State’s Attorney for the Criminal Prosecutions Bureau, specifically the Felony Trial Division. This individual will be responsible for prosecuting under the Criminal Code of the State of Illinois and will be assigned to cover different geographical areas in Cook County.
Job Responsibilities:
- Represent the People of the State of Illinois in criminal hearings and trials - Work closely with multiple law enforcement agencies - Prepare witnesses and victims for testimony - Litigate motions, petitions, bench and jury trials - Manage discovery - Make appropriate charging decisions for felony cases - Work independently and as part of a team - Communicate effectively with diverse communities
Minimum Qualifications:
- Law degree (J.D.) from an accredited law school - Member in good standing with the Illinois bar or eligible for admission through reciprocity - 6-10 years of criminal law experience - 3-5 years of criminal trial experience - Knowledge of felony offenses and evidentiary rules - Excellent legal research and writing skills - Ability to articulate sound legal arguments orally and in writing - Strong work ethic and attention to detail
Preferred Qualifications:
- 4-6 years of criminal practice - 3-6 years of prosecutorial practice - 3-6 years of trial experience at the misdemeanor or felony level - Ability to run a daily court call
Working Environment:
This position will require the Assistant State’s Attorney to cover different geographical areas in Cook County and to prosecute under the Criminal Code of the State of Illinois. The individual will be responsible for managing misdemeanor, felony, and traffic cases, as well as handling preliminary hearings, grand jury indictments, and bond hearings for felony cases. They will also work closely with law enforcement agencies and represent the People of the State of Illinois in hearings and trials. The ability to work well with diverse communities, manage a caseload independently, and communicate effectively is essential in this role.
Physical Requirements:
This job falls under the category of light work, which involves lifting up to 20 pounds and frequent walking or standing. A person who can perform light work is also capable of performing sedentary work, unless there are additional limiting factors.
