Assistant Paralegal - Full-Time Permanent Opportunity with the Federal Defender for the Eastern District of California
Overview: - The Office of the Federal Defender for the Eastern District of California is seeking a full-time permanent Assistant Paralegal for its Sacramento Office. - The position involves representing indigent persons in federal criminal cases and related court matters. - Assistant Paralegals play an integral role in our clients’ legal representation and the overall function of our office. - Duties include general case preparation, client file maintenance and organization, case management, coordinating with clients and other parties, and administrative tasks. - Applicants must have strong technology skills, be able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, and have a demonstrated work history of dependability and initiative. - Candidates must also possess good communication and interpersonal skills, be familiar with legal terminology and court procedures, and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. - This is a full-time position with federal salary and benefits, including health insurance, retirement benefits, and flexible spending accounts. - COVID vaccinations will be required for the selected candidate.

Experience: - High school diploma required, at least 3 years of general work experience, and 2 years of specialized experience as a Legal Assistant or paralegal. - Some post-high school education may be substituted for experience. - Familiarity with legal terminology, court procedures, and court rules required. - Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
Responsibilities: - General case preparation - Client file maintenance and organization - Case management, including tracking time spent - Coordinating with clients, their families, experts, and witnesses - Calendaring hearings and pleading deadlines - Interacting with other court agencies - Assisting with court trial and appellate pleading preparation, filing, and hearings - Ordering documents and records - Backup telephone and reception duties - Other legal assistant and administrative tasks as needed
Requirements: - Strong technology skills, ability to multi-task, and demonstrated work history of dependability and initiative - Good communication and interpersonal skills - Familiarity with electronic court filing systems - Interest in indigent criminal defense and compassion for clients - Microsoft Word proficiency required, experience with Microsoft Excel and Adobe Acrobat Professional preferred - Non-English speaking and/or writing skills a plus
