Job Description
Job Summary: Assistant Municipal Judge position in Fort Collins, CO with a salary of $100.00 per hour. This is a part-time hourly position with a variable schedule. The Assistant Judge will preside over municipal court cases, including civil infractions, traffic violations, and misdemeanors. They may also act as a Municipal Court Referee and hear cases related to municipal code violations. The ideal candidate will have a Juris Doctorate degree, be licensed to practice law in Colorado, and have at least five years of legal or judicial experience.
Responsibilities: - Preside over municipal court cases as needed, including arraignments, pretrial conferences, court trials, and jury trials. - Act as a Municipal Court Referee and hear cases related to municipal code violations, parking violations, and non-pointed traffic cases. - Enforce orders, rules, and judgments in compliance with applicable laws. - Impose fines and sentences upon finding of guilty or responsibility according to City Code and state and federal laws. - Design and implement appropriate penalties for defendants. - Protect and preserve the court record for potential appeals. - Attend scheduled judges' meetings (optional). - Review and rule on motions and documents related to assigned cases.
Qualifications: - Juris Doctorate degree from a nationally accredited law school. - Licensed to practice law in Colorado and in good standing with the Colorado Supreme Court. - Five years of legal or judicial experience, preferably in municipal or criminal law. - Knowledge of Colorado Law, Colorado Municipal Court Rules of Procedure, and Colorado Rules of Criminal Procedure. - Knowledge of Fort Collins City Charter, City Code, and City Traffic Code.
