This position is located in Brookings, South Dakota and offers a competitive salary of $120,000 per year. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in supporting SDSU's legal needs by providing guidance on a wide range of legal issues, including litigation, employment law, compliance, and policies impacting the university community. This is a full-time, 12-month position with excellent benefits and opportunities for professional development.
H1: Assistant General Counsel - Join Our Legal Team at Reputed Firm in Brookings, South Dakota
Responsibilities: • Provide legal guidance and representation in administrative and legal proceedings, litigation, and employment law • Serve as lead counsel in litigation cases and advise SDSU Human Resources on employment-related issues • Assist with EEOC, DOL, and DOJ inquiries and investigations • Review, draft, and analyze legal documents and provide legal and factual research • Support the development of policies and procedures • Manage subpoenas and public records requests • Assist with grievance processes and handle a variety of higher education legal matters, such as Title IX, Clery Act, and FERPA
Qualifications: • Bachelor's degree and Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school • At least three years of experience as a practicing attorney • Member in good standing of the South Dakota Bar or ability to obtain licensure within 12 months of hire • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills • Ability to manage a significant caseload and adhere to strict deadlines • Proficiency in MS Office and other office software • Valid driver's license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment
Preferred Qualifications: • Experience practicing law in higher education, government, compliance, litigation, or employment
