Overview:
The Brazos County Attorney's Office is seeking an experienced Assistant County Attorney II to join our team. As an Assistant County Attorney II, you will be responsible for reviewing criminal cases, determining offers to extend to defendants, and representing the State in all stages of criminal proceedings. This position offers the opportunity to work on more complex cases and with less supervision than an Assistant County Attorney I.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review criminal cases to determine offers and make recommendations for probation, jail time, fines, and restitution - Represent the State at all pretrial, trial, and post-trial settings - Handle applicable appellate situations, including appeals of class C misdemeanors and class A and B misdemeanors - Prepare criminal cases for trial, including assessing criminal history, reviewing evidence, and interviewing victims and witnesses - Communicate with criminal defense attorneys and defendants - Conduct intake functions to determine probable cause affidavit filing - Research legal issues as requested by judges, magistrates, and the County attorney - Review and sign motions from the Adult Probation Department and provide legal advice for cases involving new criminal charges - Attend mandatory county meetings and serve warrants and subpoenas as needed - Assist with receptionist duties and maintain current knowledge of criminal law and procedure
Requirements:
- Juris Doctor degree or equivalent combination of education and experience - At least two years of legal experience - State of Texas law license

- Strong understanding of criminal law and procedures - Ability to operate computers and perform legal research - Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail - Effective communication and presentation skills - Ability to work under time pressures and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
Work Environment:
The work environment is moderate in noise level and may require working under time pressures and handling multiple tasks simultaneously. The employee must be able to lift and move objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
