A well-respected firm in Las Cruces, New Mexico is seeking an Assc General Counsel to provide legal consultation services and support to university management. This is a full-time, exempt position with a competitive salary range of $107,543.29 to $110,000, and the opportunity for professional growth and development.
Position Summary: As an Assc General Counsel, you will be responsible for providing legal consultation services to university management, reviewing and drafting policies and procedures for legal compliance and administrative efficiency, and providing written legal opinions as requested by the General Counsel and/or other executive management. You will also assist in the implementation of policies and training within the university community, and provide guidance and internal facilitation to outside legal counsel in pending disputes involving the university. This position requires a Juris Doctorate or equivalent, at least five years of higher education legal experience, and membership in the New Mexico Bar Association or eligibility for receipt of the Public Employee Limited License within two months of employment.
Key Responsibilities: - Provide legal consultation services to senior officials on business and legal strategies and solutions - Review and draft policies, procedures, and other internal regulatory documents for legal compliance and administrative efficiency - Assist in the implementation of policies and training within the university community - Provide written legal opinions as requested by the General Counsel and/or other senior officials - Assist in providing guidance and internal facilitation to outside legal counsel in pending disputes involving the university - Support management in implementing work allocation, training, promotion, and enforcement of internal procedures and controls and dispute resolution - Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications: - Juris Doctorate or equivalent in hand by hire date - Five (5) years of professional experience directly related to the standard duties outlined (Mid-career with at least five (5) years of higher education legal experience) - Membership in the New Mexico Bar Association or eligibility for receipt of the Public Employee Limited License within two months of employment - Strong knowledge of contract documents and specifications, current legal issues and trends in higher education, legal research principles, and legal documentation procedures and requirements - Excellent organizational, coordinating, and negotiating skills - Ability to work with limited supervision and handle complex institutional matters - Strong presentation and communication skills, with the ability to provide guidance to senior officials and engage with diverse institutional constituents - Ability to provide legal opinions and draft legal documents and other written materials - Strong analytical skills and ability to investigate and analyze information to draw legally-accurate conclusions
Preferred Qualifications: - Experience in providing compliance and policy research and recommendations - Knowledge of open records analysis and responses - Experience advising on procurement and contracting - Familiarity with employment law, intellectual property, litigation, and/or transactional support
