Overview:
The Public Defender Division of CPCS is seeking Trial Attorneys to provide criminal defense representation in various offices throughout the Commonwealth. The Public Defender Division is responsible for providing legal representation and advocacy to indigent clients who are charged with criminal offenses in both the District and Superior Courts. CPCS is the state agency in Massachusetts responsible for providing an attorney for individuals who cannot afford to retain one. The agency provides representation in criminal, delinquency, family regulation, guardianship, mental health, sexually dangerous person, and sex offender registry cases, as well as in appeals and post-conviction and post-judgment proceedings. The clients represented by CPCS are diverse, creating a critical need for staff to be culturally competent and able to work well with individuals of different backgrounds.
Position Overview:
As a Trial Attorney with the Public Defender Division, you will provide legal representation and advocacy to indigent clients charged with criminal offenses in both the District and Superior Courts. After gaining experience in the District Court, it is expected that Trial Attorneys will also represent clients in the Superior Courts and handle other legal matters as permitted by a supervisor. New Trial Attorneys will receive comprehensive skills-based training and continuing education programs to ensure they are equipped to provide zealous representation to their clients.
Qualifications:
To be considered for the position of Trial Attorney, you must be eligible to practice law in Massachusetts and have access to a personal vehicle and computer with internet access. Responsibilities:
As a Trial Attorney, your responsibilities will include interviewing clients, arraignment and bail advocacy, legal research and writing, pretrial investigation, preparing and arguing motions, trials, and other duties as assigned.
