Phelps Dunbar’s summer program provides an opportunity for law students to gain experience in the day-to-day activities of a law firm practice. Summer associates will have the chance to work in multiple practice areas and groups within the firm, and will be assigned projects to help them get familiar with the firm. Partners and associates will act as mentors to the summer associates, providing informal evaluations and advice, as well as helping them to become accustomed to the office. The firm also hosts a number of social and professional functions for the students to attend.
In order to become a summer associate at Phelps Dunbar, applicants must be law students. There are a number of experiences that summer associates can take advantage of, such as connecting with other summer associates either virtually or in person, getting a full scope of practice areas, having access to experienced lawyers, learning good habits with a professional development curriculum, applying for judicial clerkships, attending social and community activities, and participating in on-campus interviews.

Projects are assigned to summer associates to allow them the opportunity to work in multiple practice areas and groups within the Firm. Throughout the program, partners and associates act as mentors to provide the summer associates with informal evaluations and advice, as well as to help acclimate the student to the office. Additionally, in an effort to become acquainted with our attorneys on a personal basis, the Firm hosts a number of social and professional functions that allow for interaction in non-work environments.
