Position: Assistant Attorney General/Special Assistant United States Attorney

Responsibilities:

- Serve as a prosecutor within the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Division of the Virginia Office of the Attorney General
- Cross-designated as a Special Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Richmond Division
- Report to both the Chief of the Major Crimes and Emerging Threats Section of the Virginia Office of the Attorney General and the Managing Assistant United States Attorney of the USAO's Richmond Criminal Division
- Handle violent crime prosecutions in collaboration with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies
- Prosecute cases primarily focused on violent crime and firearm offenses, with the possibility of also handling drug trafficking, sex-trafficking, and money-laundering cases
- Provide concise, practical, and accurate legal advice on complex issues
- Assist in the review and drafting of official advisory opinions of the Attorney General
- Review legislation during sessions of the Virginia General Assembly

Qualifications:

- Must be a United States citizen
- Graduated from an accredited law school
- Admitted to the Virginia State Bar or eligible for admission
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
- Good judgment
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to analyze and manage complex cases
- Satisfactory pre-employment adjudication required
- Continued employment subject to favorable background investigation

The Criminal Justice and Public Safety Division is the primary prosecutorial arm of the Office of the Attorney General. This cross-designated position will report to both the Chief of the Major Crimes and Emerging Threats Section of the Virginia Office of the Attorney General and the Managing Assistant United States Attorney of the USAO's Richmond Criminal Division. The position is responsible for handling violent crime prosecutions in collaboration with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, with a focus on violent crime and firearm offenses. Additional cases may include drug trafficking, sex-trafficking, and money-laundering. The position requires extensive knowledge of the state and federal criminal justice systems and state government, as well as the ability to provide concise and accurate legal advice on complex issues. The position also involves assisting in the review and drafting of official advisory opinions of the Attorney General and reviewing legislation during sessions of the Virginia General Assembly.

Applicants must be a United States citizen, have graduated from an accredited law school, and be admitted to the Virginia State Bar or eligible for admission.
