Under general direction, reviews and abstracts clinical data from patients medical records regarding events concerning a patient's episode of care. Coder assigns diagnosis and procedure codes using standardized classification systems (e.g ICD-9, CPT-4, etc.) and follows all required conventions for reimbursement and data capture. The Coder uses appropriate grouping software to assign appropriate DRG or other required grouping based on the diagnosis and procedure Codes assigned. All diagnosis and procedure codes and other appropriate data must be entered into computer systems using software applications. The Coder must use their expertise to evaluate edits and flags presented to insure accurate coding and optimal reimbursement. The Coder may be required to assist Physicians in obtaining data reports and perform other related duties as required.
Requirements:
High school graduation or equivalent.
Completion of an accredited program in ICD-9CM and CPT-4 coding.
Completion of an accredited Certified Coding Associate certificate program and certification obtained within
one year of employment.
One (1) year of experience involving coding of inpatient and ambulatory surgery records in a complex, acute care environment.
A combination of experience and demonstrated competence may be used to waive the credential requirement at hire
ART, CCS or coding certificate preferred.
Knowledge of anatomy and physiology and medical terminology.
