Introduction- CSX Transportation is headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida and it is one of the Class I railroads that services the majority of the East Coast. CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway purchased and then divided the route miles owned by Conrail on June 23, 1997. The amount of miles purchased was 11,000. CSX was able to acquire 42 percent of Conrail's assets in the deal, which was approved by the Surface Transportation Board on August 22, 1998. The 42 percent included 3,800 route miles from Conrail that were transferred over to CSX in the deal. With the new deal, CSX has route miles in 23 states, the District of Columbia, and the two Canadian provinces.
