Candidate is Overqualified – Should You Hire?

 Dated: 09-09-2013

These are troubled times and the employment market is not what it was used to be. Due to many companies cutting down on cost, there is a lot of exceptional talent "going cheap" today. Many recruiters are faced with the option of hiring overqualified candidates. Should you do it? Is an overqualified (and over-experienced) candidate good for your organization? There are advantages and disadvantages to this decision; let us look at both sides and find out whether this is an advantage or disadvantage.

  1. Can Do More For Less - Many employers are tempted to take advantage of the market conditions and grab the best talent for pennies. Don't do it. This is not a good bargain, because the professional would accept the offer due to the various constraints, but this person would not work with all his heart here. They will be looking for the first opportunity to jump to another more suitable job.

If you want to hire this talent, pay them what they're worth and take them on at this rate. They will be grateful for the employment and the fact you are playing fair. Due to this, there is a greater chance that they will stay loyal to you.

  2. Can Do More Effortlessly - Sometimes employers feel that the over experienced, overqualified talent would do more because they can do whatever task given to them effortlessly. This is not usually the case. What will happen is that this overqualified employee will very soon feel frustrated with the level of work they have to do. Since there will be no challenge for these employees, they will be restless and unhappy and actually work less than a regular employee.

  3. They Can Bring in Innovation and Better Strategy - Overqualified employees will benefit your organization only if they are assured they have adequate plans for growth. A person may agree to adjust temporarily to a lower and less challenging position as long as they know that they would not suffer too much professionally and have a chance to grow.
Also, they would aim to do their best for the benefit of the company when they feel they have a future in the company. Hence, even if you hire them at a lower pay and designation, if they are clear about a fair and promising career path, the recruitment will be beneficial to the organization.

Hence, this is a good time to pick up the best talent for a pay cut; however, if you want to get the best out of this recruitment, you will need to ensure that they feel secure and have a definite career growth plan ahead of them.
