About Food and Drug Administration: The Food and Drug Administration is one of the oldest federal agencies tasked with consumer protection. The origins of the company can be found in the year 1848 when Lewis Beck was appointed to the Patent Office for carrying out chemical analysis of various agricultural products. Though the agency was not known as FDA until 1930, its regulatory functions started with the Pure Food and Drugs Act which was established in 1906. It was a law which prohibited commerce between states in misbranded and adulterated drugs and food.
The driving force behind the law was Harvey Wiley who was the Chief Chemist at the Bureau of Chemistry. He also headed the enforcement of the law during its initial years and provided the basic protection elements which were never known to consumers till then. Since 1906 the agency as well as its responsibilities has undergone a sea change. The marketplace and the sciences related to the products being regulated have also changed. The social, economic, political, cultural and social shifts which guided these developments have undergone massive changes in the last century.
However, the mission of public health remains the same in the agency. The agency provides visitors with insights on these changes and has been responsible for the evolution of consumer protection regulation and laws in the last several decades.
