Company History: Ford Motor Company had first been launched in the year 1903. In a decade's time, the company became a world leader in the refinement and expansion of the concept of assembly lines. During the late 1990s, the company sold a huge number of cars to the booming economy in America due to lower fuel prices and growing stock market.
In 2005, Bill Ford, Chairman of the company asked Mark Fields, the President of Ford Americas to develop a plan which could return Ford to profitability again. The plan was called “The Way Forward” and the same was unveiled to the general public in January, 2006. The plan included the resizing of the company for matching the market realities, dropping inefficient and unprofitable models, closing down 14 factories, cutting down 30,000 jobs and consolidating its production lines.
The United Auto Workers and Ford, representing around 46,000 hourly workers in the country made a historic settlement in 2007. This provided a substantial break to the company for its retiree ongoing health care expenses. In June 2008 the company sold its Land Rover and Jaguar operations for $2.3 billion to Tata Motors. According to the sales in 2010, Ford is the 2nd largest automaker in the U.S. and the 5th largest automaker in the world. It also holds the 5th position in Europe currently.
