Company History: Avis Budget Group had been formed in the year 2006. The company spun off the Cendant Group as its vehicle rental department. Originally, Avis was formed in 1946 by Warren Avis in Detroit at the Willow Run Airport. The Budget brand was founded by Morris Mirkin in Los Angeles in 1958.

Transamerica Corporation eventually acquired the company and sold it off in 1986. The next year the company went public. In the year 1997, Team Rental Group purchased this public company. It was then named as the Budget Group. The assets of Avis Budget Group were sold in 2002 to the Cendant Corporation. Cendant Corporation eventually separated into four different companies in 2006- Avis Budget Group, Travelport, Wyndham Worldwide and Realogy. Today it is present in 70 countries.




The operations of the company today include more than 6,000 truck and car locations in the U.S., Canada, Latin America, Caribbean, New Zealand, Australia and in some parts of the Pacific. The rental fleet of the company includes over 340,000 vehicles. In Asia, Middle East, Africa and Europe the vehicle rental is operated in 3,800 locations by sub-licenses and subsidiaries of a third party under trademark license. In 2010, the company made a bid in order to acquire Dollar Thrifty Automotive, a rental company. However, the acquisition is still not complete.
