Company History: The company was established in 1887 as The Ohio Oil. It was purchased later in 1889 by the Standard Oil Trust of John D. Rockefeller. The company remained a part of the company until 1911 when the trust had been broken. It purchased the Transcontinental Oil company and it was in 1930 that the brand name “Marathon” had been given.
The company was renamed “Marathon Oil Company” in 1962. In 1998, the company joined hands with Ashland, Inc to form another company for refining, marketing and transporting petroleum and crude oil products, mainly in the South East U.S., upper Great Plains and the Midwest. In 2001, the company which owned Marathon and United States Steel spun off the business. In 2002, USX was renamed as Marathon Oil Corporation.
In 2003, the company sold off the operations in Canada to Husky Energy based in Calgary. It also sold off its interest in the Yates Oil Field the same year to Kinder Morgan. The company also started BIMCP the same year in Equatorial Guinea for controlling malaria in the area. It proved to be highly successful in reducing the transmission of malaria and reduced the number of children having malaria parasites. In July, 2011 the company completed the spin-off of its Marathon Petroleum.
