Company History: Sears Holdings was founded by Richard Sears as a Watch Company in the year 1886. The first ever Sears Catalog had been published in the year 1888. The catalog grew to be 322 pages by 1894 and featured automobiles, sporting goods, bicycles and sewing machines. The company opened its first retail store in February, 1925 in Chicago.
The first Sears store included a soda fountain and an optical store. It opened its first ever freestanding retail Sears store in Evansville, Indiana in October, 1920. By the 1950s, the company had built several urban departmental stores. Sears also expanded into the suburban markets in the 1950s and in the 60s and 70s it expanded in the malls. Homart Development Company was formed in the year 1959 for developing various malls.
During the 90s, Sears starting divesting of several of its non-retail entities that were affecting the bottom line of the company. Sears Grand was opened in 2003, a new concept store which carried everything in a regular Sears store along with groceries, movies, music, electronics, magazines, books, party supplies, cards, pet food, home decor, cleaning supplies, baby care, toys, beauty and health products. As of 2000, Sears had 863 retail stores in malls, most of which included Auto Centers. It also has 1,200 additional retail locations including battery, tire, outlet and hardware stores along with several independent stores in rural markets.
