Company History: Verizon Communications was founded initially as the Bell Atlantic Corporation and was a part of the 7 Baby Bells which were formed due to anti-trust judgment which was made. GTE was acquired by Bell Atlantic in June, 2000. This was when the company changed its name and adopted Verizon Communications. The merger was one of the largest in the country’s business history. Shares of Verizon were made a part of the Dow Jones Industrial Average in April, 2004.
Currently, the company has around 140.3 million land lines. With its MCI merger, the company also has over 250,000 employees. The company served customers through much of the country. In 2004, Verizon sold 20.5% of its stake in Telus. In February, 2005, the company decided to acquire MCI which was formerly known as WorldCom. The former telephone operations of GTE in Alabama, Kentucky and Missouri were sold by Verizon to CenturyTel and Alltel. CenturyTel later became CenturyLink while Alltel later became Windstream.
In May, 2009, the company also announced its decision of selling all of its assets in Wisconsin, West Virginia, South Carolina Washington, Oregon, Ohio, North Carolina, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Arizona and some of its California assets to Frontier Communications.
