In the early days of the company, it made bicycle tires and poker chips, but things really took off with the invention of the automobile. In 1908 Henry Ford began using Goodyear tires on the Model-T and in 1912 Goodyear began making tires for aircraft. During the First World War, Goodyear manufactured dirigibles and hot air balloons for the US military which were used to carry out reconnaissance operations throughout the war. Today, Goodyear is still famous around the world for the Goodyear Blimp, which is ubiquitous over sports events.
In a lawsuit that was repeatedly mentioned during the recent confirmation hearings of Justice Elena Kagan, Goodyear was sued in 1998 for discrimination by Lilly Ledbetter after she discovered that she was being paid substantially less than male employees in the same position with less seniority. Although she won her case, the Supreme Court reversed the decision in 2008 saying that Ledbetter waited too long to bring her complaint, while not disputing the factual allegations.
Goodyear has not shied away from controversy over another politically hot issue. The company has announced a no firearms policy, banning handguns from all company property, including company owned stores. The policy applies to employees and customers and is designed to promote a safer workplace environment, according to the company.
