Safeway Jobs

By   |  Dated: 09-22-2010

As a grocery store company, Safeway is the 3rd largest supermarket chain in North America, and a member of the Fortune 500 list. The company got its start in 1911 as a single store in Los Angeles, owned by Sam Seelig. Seelig built the chain up to 71 stores by 1922, but facing increasing debt to his wholesalers after World War I, Seelig gave up control of the chain by swapping stock for debt relief. Under new ownership, the company took the name Safeway to remind customers that unlike most grocery stores at the time, the chain worked only on a cash and carry basis. By not selling on credit, customers were buying the ''safe way''. In 1926 the company merged with Skaggs stores, becoming the largest grocery chain west of the Mississippi.

Today Safeway operates 1,775 grocery stores, mostly under the Safeway brand. In California and Nevada, Safeway owns several hundred VONS branded stores as well. Safeway employs just fewer than 200,000 people, mostly in store employees. While most companies faced steep increases in healthcare costs in the first decade of this century, Safeway kept healthcare costs flat by providing incentive based discounts to health care premiums for employees who maintain healthy lifestyles.

Safeway employees in Canada walked off the job for two weeks in the mid 1990's and for a few months at the end of 2003 and beginning of 2004, and the United Food and Commercial Workers picketed Safeway owned VONS locations in Southern California. The picket lines came down in February after an agreement was reached that included more favorable terms for healthcare benefits in return for lower base salaries and a reduction of Sunday pay from time and a half to time plus one dollar. Both sides claimed victory.
