Pasadena, CA — The Labor Department's monthly job report showed that the non-farm private sector added only 71,000 jobs in July. The economy also shed 131,000 jobs and the unemployment figure stayed at 9.5 percent.
This means that there are 14.6 million unemployed people. But this figure includes only the people who have registered as unemployed and not people who have given up looking for work or not on government's unemployment benefits. New claims for unemployment benefits went up to 479,000 and the total number of people getting them was 4.54 million. The figure does not include the other 3.9 million people who are receiving extended unemployment benefits through the federal government.
Although most sectors lost jobs in July, the Labor Department showed there were six main sectors which add jobs. They were: Leisure and hospitality (6,000), retail (6,700), transportation and warehousing (12,200), trade (25,000), healthcare (26,000), and manufacturing (36,000).
Reflecting this job market, Hound, a job search engine has been able to add a total of over 95,000 jobs in seven days. The job openings available for the above mentioned sector on Hound were: Hospitality (18,125), retail (29,915), transportation (4,650), healthcare (138,207), and manufacturing (5,246).
