Pasadena, CA — Congress will be back from its July 4 recess and the main issue will be the restoration of unemployment benefits for the long term unemployed. By now, 1.7 million unemployed people have stopped receiving their unemployment benefits. The number of long-term unemployed (unemployed for 27 weeks and more) was 6.8 million which accounted for 45.5% of total unemployed.
The various local media outfits keep reporting that with unemployment benefits running out, people are desperate to find any jobs available. But with one job opening for every five unemployed people, getting any kind of job is hard. In response to this kind of pessimistic thinking, CEO of Hound, A. Harrison Barnes, says that most of the strong language being used in the media is just to eyeballs. ''The last thing that you need to do when you are unemployed is to read those depressing news stories. Your time would be better spend looking up jobs wherever possible. Just this past week we have been able to compile over 85,000 jobs.''
The main states where jobs are available are: Massachusetts (15,408), New York (21,886), Pennsylvania (17,587), California (53,989), and Texas (35,425). The main sectors are: Accounting (17,042), Education (37,529), Engineering (55,657), and Information Technology (61,707).
