Pasadena, CA — The private sector was able to add 83,000 new jobs in June. But the Labor Department said that total payroll employment, including government employees, was down by 125,000 in June. The figure includes the loss of 225,000 Census workers who were let go after finishing their work. The data is from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The unemployment rate has also gone down to 9.5 percent in June, compared to 9.7 percent in May. But the decrease is widely believed to be because around 652,000 unemployed people have given up their job search. The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not count people who are no longer looking for work as unemployed. Also in June, the number of long-term unemployed (individuals unemployed for 27 weeks and more) was 6.8 million (45.5 percent of total unemployed). Overall, there are 14.6 million officially unemployed people and an estimated further 1.2 million discouraged workers. Discouraged workers are unemployed people not looking for work.

Although the media keeps running stories of how unemployment is unlikely to go down soon, one man is optimistic about the future. CEO A. Harrison Barnes of Hound, a job search engine, says that there are still many jobs that are available. ''In the last seven days alone, my team has been able to dig up over 92,000 jobs. And they are not just low paying jobs. There are over 4,500 jobs that pay 100K and more, plus 56,000 engineering jobs, over 17,000 accounting jobs and thousands of other highly skilled jobs.''
