They can work for computer systems design and related services firms, software publishers, computer and electronic product manufacturing industries, insurance carriers, and corporate headquarters of companies. Software developers work long hours.
To become a software developer, a bachelor’s degree in computer science or another computer programming skill is very highly recommended, if not required by almost all companies. Skills related to the field in which the engineer is working are also recommended, so if they are a developer of banking software, an understanding of banking and financial methods is needed.
Some developers start out as computer programmers before advancing to a developer position. The next level in the field is to become an information technology project manager or computer and information systems manager.
