Learn to Deal with and Meet Deadlines – 5 Foolproof Tips

 Dated: 10-15-2013

Deadlines are deadly both to your mind and body – if you allow them to overwhelm you. The trick here is to ensure that you control the deadlines and not the other way around. This – for most people who work in high stress environments – is often easier said than done. However, if you want to succeed in promoting your career quickly and efficiently, you need to master how to deal with deadlines and meet them head on. Here are a few exceptional tips that help you:

  1. Stay Unwaveringly Organized - The solution is so simple that it makes you smile. Stay organized. Many people waste a huge amount of time chasing papers, data, information and so on. When you organize your desk, time and documents you will be able to work quicker and much better. You will also experience much less stress when you know where everything is and have instant access to whatever you need.

  2. Do it Now - If you know anyone who never fails to meet deadlines you will find someone who does things on war footing. In other words, he or she aims to finish every task like there is no tomorrow and everything has to be completed today. If you want to beat deadlines, do it NOW. There is no worse an enemy for deadlines than procrastination. Break your task into smaller easily achievable ones and push yourself until each one is completed. The task does not look forbidding when you break it into baby steps; then suddenly, just by putting one foot in front of the other you will see that your task is completed.

  3. Delegate, Delegate, Delegate - Delegation is not passing the buck as many mistakenly think of it. Delegation is letting go of details while you concentrate on the main task. You do not wash your hands off of those details when you delegate them; you just ensure that they are done better by people who are more qualified to do it. You are still responsible for the quality and timeliness of your assignment, but now there is a higher chance that the job will be done quicker and better.

  4. Say 'No' in the Beginning if You Think it Cannot be Done - Do not bite off more than you can chew. If you feel you cannot do it in spite of your best efforts, say so right at the beginning. Do not wait until the eleventh hour to confess this - as by then the deadline will no longer be met.

  5. Remove All Distractions - Do let everyone know that when you are working you will tolerate no interruptions unless it is a life and death situation. Stay away from the phone, coffee breaks, email, and Facebook. Focus on your work; you will find that when you focus on the task at hand and give it all you have, it is easier to complete than it seemed in the beginning.
