The company was established in 1987 at Menlo Ventures and was initially known as Oligogen, Inc. It took on its current name, Gilead Sciences Inc. the following year, which happens to be the same year that Donald Rumsfeld joined the company's board. He served as the Chairman in 1997 but relinquished his position in 2001 when he was appointed to the position of US Secretary of Defense.

Since its founding, Gilead Sciences has expanded through a number of acquisitions within Colorado and beyond, including NeXstar Pharmaceuticals, Trangle Pharmaceuticals, Myogen, Corpus Pharma, CV Therapeutics, Raylo Chemicals, Arresto Biosciences Inc, and Calistoga Pharmaceuticals.




The company is credited with the development of a number of breakthrough medications including Atripla, the once a day for HIV infection. Gilead Sciences is also responsible for the discovery of Tamiflu, which became a widely recognized medication during the bird flu pandemic. Tamiflu was developed by Gilead and then licensed to Roche.
