The company, which was founded in Virginia in 1882, initially functioned as a pharmaceutical and surgical supplier for drugstores and hospitals in certain US regions. The founders, Otho O. Owens and G. Gilmer Minor were salesmen from competing drug wholesalers who decided to come together to form their own company. In the 1960s, the company entered the medical-surgical distributor business and eventually became a recognized leader. In 1992, the company opted to focus solely on the medical/surgical marketplace and sold its wholesale drug business.
Today, Owens & Minor boasts 55 distribution centers, which turn out a number of products including consumable goods such as disposable gloves, dressings, endoscopic products, needles and syringes, sterile procedure trays, and wound-closure products.

The Supply Chain Internship Program is a two summer obligation that is specifically designed for college students who are studying the supply chain, logistics, and healthcare fields. The Internship Program is targeted toward students involved in areas of sales, marketing, legal fields, finance, and human resources. The final program, the Partnership for the Future, is a three summer internship that serves high school students by providing them with work experience and summer employment.
