Today's U.S. Bank was created during the 1990s through the mergers of several major regional banks such as the Colorado National Bank, First Bank System, U.S. Bank, Mercantile, Firstar, WestOne Bank, and Star Bank, which had all grown through the mergers of smaller banks over the decades. U.S. Bank can trace roots to the 1850s, when Farmers and Millers Bank in Milwaukee grew into the First National Bank of Milwaukee, then First Wisconsin, and finally Firstar, or to the State Savings Institution in St. Louis, which became part of the Mercantile Trust Company. The current U.S. Bancorp is a result of the 2001 merger of Firstar and U.S. Bank, with their headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
