A One Page Resume Versus a Two Page Resume

 Dated: 01-29-2010

A resume is the primary and one of the most important factors in a job search. Since it can be considered as the first meeting between you and the prospective employer, and serves as a promotional brochure, it is of prime importance to do everything within your power to provide insight into your credentials in the correct manner.

One of the leading factors that could lead to either the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of your resume is the length of the resume.

The advantages of a one page resume:

Hiring managers have hundreds of resumes to go through and allot just a few seconds to each. While creating your resume, you need to capture the recruiter’s attention in just a single glance, and this is where a single page resume has a better chance of being considered. Your resume may be visually appealing, heavy with accomplishments, and worded perfectly, but if it runs into four to five pages or even more, flooded with content, it would lose its appeal because no one really has the time to go through all the data in such a short period. In such a case, important information that you may wish to showcase is not given its due importance and you lose the valuable chance to be called for an interview. The challenge then becomes to create a resume which showcases the most important information in a concise manner in order that it is captured in a glance. This is possible in a single page resume. As far as possible, you need to summarize all your data, keep it attractive, and exhibit your abilities and uniqueness in a one page resume, so that it is read and you are considered for an interview.

Using a two-paged resume

In contrast to a recent graduate, a highly experienced professional generally has a lot of matter to include in a resume. In such cases, a two-paged resume could be used in order to fit in all the information. However, it must be remembered that there is nothing better than a single page resume and the additional page that you might use to include any extra information should go just as far as that. A lengthier resume is undoubtedly discarded.

What you basically need to do is to try and make a single page resume highlighting the best of your credentials and use it as an effective instrument to advertise your talents and potential. If and only if the need arises, should you consider a two-paged resume, if you wish to succeed in your job search.
